Men's dark brown woven leather huarache sandals with a stitched rubber sole, handmade in Mexico. Thin vaqueta cowhide straps, dyed dark brown and woven by hand, cross the instep in an X, and a band of three straps cinched with a leather loop sits over your toes. These dark brown huaraches are the same Mexican huarache sandals as our men's open toe woven leather huarache sandals in natural, down to the last stitch; only the color changes.

Men's dark brown slip-on huarache sandals: same weave, darker leather

Slide your foot in and go, with nothing to buckle. The heel counter does the holding: a fixed piece of vaqueta, rough side in, that cups the heel and sends the straps fanning across the instep. With the heel, sides and instep held, they don't flap as you walk. No metal anywhere: leather, thread and rubber.

Expect them to feel tight at first, especially at the sides. Vaqueta starts firm, softens with wear and molds to your foot, so they should feel snug on day one: a pair that feels roomy at first will be too loose once the leather gives. If they pinch, wear them around the house with thick socks, a little at a time. Never soak them to stretch them: water stains and dries out the leather.

How they feel underfoot: a rubber sole with a wave tread

You stand on a flat natural vaqueta insole with no arch, black-stitched around the edge. No padding: you feel the ground. The open toe and the weave keep your feet cool.

Underneath is a rubber sole, not a tire sole: flat black rubber with no heel, a wave-pattern tread and rounded nubs around the edge. It's stitched to the insole, not nailed, and the pale thread shows on the bottom. For now, leather soles come only on our closed toe styles: see our Mexican huaraches with leather soles. For a tire sole, try our Mexican beach huaraches with tire soles.

Dark brown leather: what to expect from the color

The straps are vaqueta dyed dark brown, and the insole is natural vaqueta: these dark brown huarache sandals pair dark straps with a lighter footbed. Each hide takes the dye its own way, so the shade can vary a little between pairs and batches. Next to our natural pair, the dark straps on men's brown huarache sandals like these hide everyday dust better; the insole shows wear as on the light pair.

The images on this page were made with AI: the first is AI-generated, and the other two are photos of the same style in natural leather, recolored with AI. In person, the brown and the finish may look slightly different. Questions about the color? Message us before you order.

What to wear with brown huarache sandals

Wear them as in the photo, with rolled-up linen pants, or with jeans, chinos or shorts; up top, a guayabera or a linen shirt. With black or navy pants, dark brown looks dressier than the natural pair, and a brown belt pulls it together. If you want men's dark brown leather sandals that work beyond the beach, a woven pair like this dresses up more easily than a slide.

As authentic Mexican huaraches for men, the style goes by Spanish names: in Mexico it's a "huarache de araña," a "huarache espiga" (for the wheat-ear pattern on the heel counter) or a "huarache de metedera" (the slip-on kind), and this color is sold as "huaraches de araña cafés." You'll also find pairs like these listed as men's woven leather sandals or Mexican leather huaraches for men, and in this color as brown Mexican huaraches.

Size guide (US size, MX size and insole length)
US 7 (MX 25) – 25 cm
US 8 (MX 26) – 26 cm
US 9 (MX 27) – 27 cm
US 10 (MX 28) – 28 cm
US 11 (MX 29) – 29 cm
US 12 (MX 30) – 30 cm

The centimeters are the length of the insole, not of your foot. Order your usual US size: that's the size we use to prepare your pair. If you wear a half size, take the whole size below (9.5 → 9). If you wear a whole size, order that size and don't size down: the length doesn't change with wear. Wide feet? Message us your usual size before ordering. For EU or UK sizes, the conversion is in our size guide.

If a number inside the sandal isn't the one you ordered, it's the Mexican size, sometimes shortened: an "8" means MX 28 = US 10.

FAQ

Are huarache sandals supposed to be tight?

Snug, yes; painful, no: they should hug the sides and heel at first and ease up with wear.

Do they stretch?

They give a little in width and mold to your foot over the first few weeks; they don't get longer.

Can leather huarache sandals get wet?

A splash or a wet sidewalk, yes: dry them in the shade, out of the sun. Soaking or swimming in them, no: soaked vaqueta stains and dries out.

Can you wear them with socks?

Most people wear them without socks; thin socks work on cool days.

How do I clean dark brown leather huarache sandals?

Brush them with a soft dry brush, wipe with a barely damp cloth and let them air-dry in the shade. Now and then, apply a thin coat of neutral leather cream: the insole is lighter than the straps, and a tinted cream would stain it. Never put them in the washing machine.

Are huarache sandals good for flat feet?

Flat leather insole, no arch, no cushioning: fine if you're used to flat shoes, but not the pair for you if you rely on orthotics.

Where do they ship from?

From Mexico. Checkout shows the delivery time and cost of each shipping method to your country before you pay.

Want a lighter brown? Our honey brown woven huarache sandals are also open toe on a black rubber sole, with a different weave. See every other style in our Mexican open toe huaraches for men.
