Men's open toe huarache sandals in handwoven natural leather with a rubber sole, handmade in Jalisco, Mexico. Your toes show under a band of thin leather straps, cinched at the center with a leather strip; behind it, two sets of the same straps, woven by hand, cross the instep in an X and fan back into a wrap-around leather heel. Looking for Mexican huarache sandals for men? These are our open toe handwoven huaraches.

Men's slip-on huaraches: how they stay on without a buckle

These are men's slip-on huarache sandals: slide your foot in and go. What holds the foot is the heel counter: a fixed piece of the same leather that cups the heel at the back and sides, rough side in. The straps fan out from it like the legs of a spider and cross the instep, so the foot is held at the back, sides and top. No buckle, no rivets: leather, thread and rubber.

Men's woven leather huarache sandals with a rubber sole: how they are built

Vaqueta is plain cowhide, cut here into thin straps and woven by hand: about five straps per set, interlaced over and under the other set; the toe band goes through a slot in the insole on one side and weaves into the side straps on the other. These are handmade Mexican huaraches, made start to finish in Jalisco. The insole is undyed vaqueta leather, a shade warmer than the straps, black-stitched around its edge: the sole is stitched to the insole, not nailed; underneath, pale stitching on the rubber and not a single nail. The sole is flat black molded rubber, no heel, slip-resistant, with a wave tread and rounded nubs along the edge, under a flat leather footbed, no arch support or padding. This is a rubber sole, not a recycled tire sole. Prefer a tire sole? See our vintage beach huaraches with tire soles.

Natural leather: light beige that darkens to a warm tan

Natural leather means exactly that: genuine leather, undyed and unpainted. Straps, insole and heel counter are 100% leather: natural undyed vaqueta cowhide. Natural leather is not pure white: it is a light beige with the grain and darker marks of the hide showing, and each pair varies a little from the photos. Sun and wear turn it a warm tan, edging toward light brown, with a patina: after a few months they look like yours.

How to style huaraches: what to wear them with

Wear them with linen pants, as in the photos, or jeans, shorts or a guayabera. The light color goes with everything you own: a huaraches outfit is whatever you had on. These are men's leather summer sandals, for the city or the beach.

These are authentic Mexican huaraches for men, which you may also see listed as men's woven leather sandals, men's open toe huaraches, men's leather huaraches, slip-on huaraches for men or men's woven huarache sandals, all made in Jalisco and shipped from Mexico. In Mexico this style is called "huarache de araΓ±a" (spider huarache, for the straps fanning from the heel), "huarache espiga" (ear of wheat, for the weave) or "huarache playero" (beach huarache).

Do huaraches run big or small? Neither, if you go by centimeters on the huarache size chart above. Whole sizes only: if you wear a half size, size down. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one: the leather usually gives about half a size over the first weeks of wear. If your measurement lands exactly on a size, order your usual size and do not size down. How to measure is in the size guide.

Order your US size: that is the size we use to prepare your pair. The Mexican equivalent of each size is in the chart above; if you see a number inside the shoe that is not the one you ordered, that is the Mexican size.

FAQ

Do huaraches stretch?

About half a size over the first weeks: if you are between sizes, go down.

How do I break them in?

Short walks the first few days, longer as the leather gives.

Are they good for wide feet?

Send us your measurement in centimeters before ordering; we will tell you straight.

Are Mexican huaraches comfortable?

Leather over rubber, no padding: if you like feeling the ground, yes; if you need cushioning, no.

For the same leather in the traditional wide-band weave, see our men's leather huarache sandals; for a buckle, or sizes up to US 15, the natural leather pachuco huaraches. Every open toe style we make is in the mens open toe huarache sandals collection.
