Closed toe huarache sandals for women, Roman style, in honey or brown, handmade in Mexico from genuine leather. The vamp carries a large sunflower tooled in relief on the leather, framed by a border of small triangular cutouts, and the sides are woven from interlaced leather strips; at the back, two long ties run through the loop on the heel counter and wrap around the ankle.

The Roman name comes from those ties: they start at the throat of the vamp, pass through the loop on the heel counter (a leather back panel that wraps the heel) and continue as two thin, long ties that wrap around the ankle and knot wherever they sit best for you, at the front or to the side. There is no buckle; you set the fit with the knot, as high and as snug as you like. Between the toe and the heel counter the foot is open at the sides, as on a sandal: the instep and the arch show.

What sets this model apart is how it is built. The toe is a solid piece of leather that covers the toes completely: that is where the sunflower is tooled, petals and dotted center raised in relief (tooled leather, stamped into the hide, not a stitched-on or printed ornament), ringed by a border of triangular cutouts that runs single along the sides and doubles up at the toe and at the throat, letting air through. The lower edge of the vamp is hand-woven from interlaced leather strips that run down to the sole. The insole and lining are synthetic, in a golden beige, with white stitching visible all around; the sole is synthetic too, in a light tan with an olive cast, flat, low-profile and flexible, with no heel. Each pair has its size number stamped on the insole.

With a closed toe, your toes stay covered and the shoe breathes through the cutouts and the woven sides: these are women's leather huaraches you can wear to the office or around town without them reading as beachwear. They work as huarache flats with a dress and just as well with denim every day. Honey is a light natural beige, like undyed leather, and goes with white, linen and off-white tones; brown is a medium tobacco brown that holds its own with denim, skirts and stronger colors. The design is identical in both colors: only the shade of the leather changes.

These are Mexican huarache sandals for women, handmade in Mexico and shipped from Mexico. You will also see them written as guaraches, or described as sunflower huaraches, women's huaraches with ankle strap, Roman leather sandals or lace-up huaraches: they are the same traditional closed toe Mexican huaraches.

If you are between sizes, take the smaller one: the leather usually gives about half a size over the first weeks of wear. If your measurement lands exactly on a size, order your usual size and do not size down. Measure your foot in centimeters and compare it with the chart; the step-by-step is in the size guide.
