Men's pachuco huarache sandals with tire soles and an adjustable ankle strap, in natural leather, handmade in Jalisco, Mexico. They are open toe: your toes show under a wide leather band at the front, and behind it thin handwoven leather straps cross in the classic pachuco weave, covering the vamp and running down both sides to the heel. The leather is undyed, a light beige with the grain and darker natural marks of the hide, and it darkens with wear. With the open toe and the gaps in the weave, the foot breathes at the front and along the sides.

Adjustable ankle strap with buckle: how it fits and adjusts

The ankle strap starts at the heel counter, where it is riveted on, runs up through the slot of a vertical center piece joined to the vamp (the two form a T) and buckles on the outside with a silver-tone metal buckle. A row of holes lets you set it as snug or as loose as you like. Worried it will pinch? Only if you overtighten it: the strap is there to work, not to decorate, and its only job is to keep the sandal from slipping off at the back, so it never has to be tight. If you searched for men's huaraches with strap or huaraches with buckle, this is it: the buckle is metal, silver-tone, not plastic. The heel counter is cut from the same natural leather.

Men's huarache sandals with tire soles: how they are built

Each strap is cut narrow and woven by hand, and the weave ends at the front in the wide leather band. The insole is undyed vaqueta leather, smooth and a shade warmer than the straps, and all around its edge you can see the heads of the nails following a line scored into the leather: the sole is nailed to the insole, not stitched. At the edge, a thin strip of natural leather shows between the weave and the black sole. Under it sits a recycled tire sole (suela de llanta): black rubber cut from a used tire, with the tire's own tread, made for hard wear on pavement, cobblestone or dirt. Are they slippery? The tread is what gives them grip. Flip the pair over and you see the nail tips coming through it, the way Mexican tire sandals are traditionally made. The footbed is flat, leather straight onto rubber, with no arch support or padding.

Natural leather: light beige that darkens with wear

Natural leather here means exactly that: genuine leather left undyed and unpainted, so it comes in a light beige close to cream, with the grain, streaks and small marks of the hide showing through. Vaqueta is the plain cowhide traditional huaraches are cut from, and as with any undyed leather sandals, each pair varies a little from the photos; that is what natural leather huaraches are. This is leather that darkens with age: sun and wear turn it a warm tan and give it a patina, and after a few months they stop looking new and start looking like yours. If you would rather have a dyed finish, the same model comes in tan leather (link below).

What to wear them with: as in the photo, linen pants with the cuffs rolled up; also denim, shorts or a guayabera. The light color goes with everything you already own. These are men's leather huarache sandals made for warm weather, for the city or a Saturday out, not beachwear.

These are authentic Mexican huaraches for men in the classic pachuco style, men's traditional Mexican sandals you may also see listed as pachuco huarache sandals, huaraches with ankle strap, woven leather huarache sandals, open toe huaraches for men, Mexican sandals with tire soles or genuine leather huarache sandals: the same handmade Mexican sandals, made in Jalisco and shipped from Mexico.

Do huaraches run big or small? Go by centimeters, not by feel. US sizes 7 to 15 (MX 25 to 33). Whole sizes only: if you wear a half size, size down. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one: the leather usually gives about half a size over the first weeks of wear. If your measurement lands exactly on a size, order your usual size and do not size down. Measure your foot in centimeters and compare it with the chart; the step-by-step is in the size guide. Wide feet? Message us with your measurement before you order.

Order your US size: that is the size we use to prepare your pair. The Mexican equivalent of each size is in the chart above; if you see a number inside the shoe that is not the one you ordered, that is the Mexican size.

The same model, with the same strap and buckle, also comes in tan leather pachuco huaraches (dyed, glossy finish). If you would rather skip the strap, see the dark brown vintage pachuco huaraches without strap, also in US 7 to 15. Every open toe style we make for men is in the mens open toe huarache sandals collection.
