Men's Embroidered Cross Strap Huarache Sandals – Tire Sole

Men's embroidered huarache sandals in leather, with two wide cross straps and tire soles. We make them in our workshop in Jalisco, Mexico. They are open toe: the two bands of embroidered leather cross in an X over the top of the foot, your toes stay free and the heel is open, with no heel counter: only a back strap with a buckle holds it in place. They come in three colors: black and white, black on black (tone-on-tone embroidery), and brown and white.

Cross strap huarache sandals for men: how the back strap adjusts

Each band ends at the back in a gold-tone metal rivet. The one-piece back strap wraps around the heel: on one side it is riveted to the band, on the other it closes with a gold-tone metal buckle, a rectangular frame with a single prong. Holes in the strap let you set it as snug or as loose as you like: its job is to keep the sandal on your heel as you walk, not to squeeze. It is cut from the same leather and in the same color as the bands, and like them it has a light gray, suede-like underside.

Men's huarache sandals with tire soles: how they are built

The insole is natural tan leather with a matte, nubuck-like finish, and a line of stitching runs all around it a few millimeters from the edge. That stitching goes through to the sole: turn the pair over and you see it on the underside of the rubber. In other words, the sole is stitched on, not nailed; there are also a few staples at the toe and where the bands end at the back. At the front, the bands run down to the edge of the insole with no rivets or nails showing. Underneath is the tire sole (suela de llanta): black rubber cut from a tire, often with some of the tire's own molded lettering. Each sole comes from a different part of the tire, so the pattern underfoot and the lettering change from pair to pair: some show a shallow diamond pattern and tire symbols, others are nearly smooth, with lettering and lines. Along the edge you see the black rubber with the natural leather of the insole on top.

Colors: black and white, black on black, or brown and white

Black and white. White thread on black leather, with a fill so dense it almost covers the band: fret patterns (grecas), stepped motifs and a center strip of interlaced curved lines. The edge stitching is cream, and the back strap is embroidered in white with a vine of leaves and curling tendrils. It is the one with the most contrast of the three.

Black on black. Black thread on black leather, tone on tone: the same kind of design, with fret patterns, stepped motifs and curved lines, that you notice more by the texture of the stitching than by the color. The most understated of the three: from a distance they read as plain black huarache sandals, and up close the embroidery shows. The insole stays natural tan leather and the underside of the straps light gray: the straps, the embroidery and the sole are black. In the color selector it is listed as Black.

Brown and white. Reddish brown leather embroidered in white thread, with a more open design than the black and white pair, so more of the leather shows: boxed fret patterns, stepped motifs and a center vine with leaves and curling tendrils. The edge stitching is ochre, and the back strap is embroidered in white too. In the color selector it is listed as Brown/white.

The brown pair has its own embroidery, different from the two black pairs, which share the same kind of design. The placement of the embroidery on the band may vary slightly from pair to pair and from the photos.

What to wear them with: linen pants with the cuffs rolled up, jeans, shorts or a guayabera. The black on black pair goes with darker or dressier clothes; the brown and white and the black and white pairs look best with light linen and neutral tones.

Do huaraches run big or small? Go by centimeters, not by feel. Whole sizes only: if you wear a half size, size down. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one: the leather usually gives about half a size over the first weeks of wear.
